The Healthier Catering Commitment

The Mayor is supporting the Healthier Catering Commitment (HCC), a voluntary scheme promoted by local authorities to help caterers and food businesses make simple, healthy improvements to their food.

Small changes can make a big difference - making straightforward changes to ingredients, processes and portion sizes can help food businesses improve the diet of customers and increase profits.

Why we need healthier takeaways

  • 38%
    of children in London
are either overweight or obese, the highest proportion in England
  • 25%
    of takeaways in the UK
are located within a 5 minute walk of a school
  • 20%
    of adults and children
eat takeaway meals at home once a week or more
  • 24
    London boroughs
are promoting the Healthier Catering Commitment so far
Our aims

London has over 8,000 fast food takeaways. They're good for London’s economy, but they’re often bad for Londoners’ health. The Mayor has therefore committed to supporting local authorities and businesses to:

  • Help boroughs reduce the negative effects fast food takeaways have on our health (especially those around schools)
  • Encourage environmental and public health teams to work together to tackle childhood obesity
  • Support businesses that sign up to the commitment to make their food healthier
Are you eligible?

Any food business can apply to sign up to the HCC - whether you're a fast food takeaway, restaurant, café or sandwich bar. To become accredited, you will need a food hygiene rating of 3, 4 or 5 and have to meet:

  • a minimum of eight criteria overall, of which;
  • four are mandatory
  • a further three are mandatory if you fry food

The criteria cover the main areas of healthier frying, healthier promotions, reducing salt and sugar, and access to fruit and vegetables. Check out the full list of criteria for more information.

How do I sign up?

The Takeaways Toolkit

We've created a takeaways toolkit which contains a wide range of measures (including the HCC) local authorities can use to maintain the economic benefits of takeaways whilst reducing their negative impacts on our health.
