The proposed extention of ULEZ in 2021 is very worrying to myself and I am sure to most other self employed people.
It is a regressive tax.
Like thousands of the self employed, be they electricians, builders, plumbers etc etc a van is essential to their trade for carrying tools and equipment.
The majority of which are diesel and unless very new will be liable to the ULEZ charge.
The hard working self employed will have to therefore sell their van which no one near a ULEZ scheme will touch and upgrade. (I have a new Peugeot van and to my horror found out it was only euro diesel 5).Alternatively they can pass on the tax to their clients making London even more expensive.
While I understand the need for a cleaner enviroment perhaps the Mayor will consider the following traffic congestion problem areas.
Intelligent Traffic Systems
How many of our traffic lights are intelligent and have the ability to quickly prioritise during rush hour or changes in traffic flow?
It seems to me that the traffic light has not kept up with technology.
Turn on the Uber App and see how many Uber cars are driving around your area. There are too many of them on the road.
Go to any mainline railway station or airport and look at the ridiculous length of taxis queing for a fare whilst their engines idle.
No intelligent traffic light systems. Is there any real incentive for works on major roads to complete as quickly as possible. Road closed signs etc not being removed after competion. Sites controlling the taffic by stopping traffic for their own vehicles.
Are the developers paying a 'disturbance tax' on the delays they cause ?
Controlled parking schemes have squeezed out visitors parking resulting in cars driving round and around looking for parking whilst reident bays may remain relatively empty.
Following a traffic incident, traffic wardens would in the past help direct and control the traffic. Not any more and where are the police?
