Sunday 22 September 2019 was World Car Free Day. A large area of central London was closed off for free, outdoor activities and many boroughs were organising activities too. Londoners could request a Play Street from their local council, and close their streets for their own community events.

Did you take part in Car Free Day this year, why or why not? What was your experience? And did you apply for a Play Street?

What an absolutely ridiculous idea - but typical of our completely useless Mayor.

I agree with the previous comment. Disabled people, like myself and my wife, are often ignored, or forgotten, in all the anti-car rhetoric and the clamour about cycling and walking.

NO CONgestion Charge
NO Parking Charges

Thanks everyone for all your comments in this discussion so far. We're sharing them with our Transport Team at City Hall, colleagues at Transport for London (TfL) and Will Norman, London's Walking and Cycling Commissioner.

Some of you have asked for more details on the event and the Play Streets. You can find all the available info on this page, where you can sign up for updates too.

A few of you have raised concerns about accessibility on Car Free Day. Our colleagues in the Transport Team told us that: “Car Free Day is for everyone. Access for disabled people is at the heart of TfL’s event planning and we will share information on how everyone can enjoy the day well in advance of the event. Buses will run through the centre of the event area, taxi drop off zones will be available to access the event and there will be activities for people of all ages and abilities to participate and enjoy.”

We hope this information helps.

Have any of you already applied for a Play Street? What would you like to do on Car Free Day in your local area, or in central London?

Car free is a brilliant idea. We have to show people what a clean , uncluttered, city for walking, cycling and other car free journeys could be like. No pollution and no perceived or actual risk of car collision.

Having gained the knowledge of the pollution reducing effects of a day without/less cars on the roads I  do not see further need for such days- we already know what is needed!

Potentially a good concept that we should develop into regular Sunday traffic free streets where there is community acceptance. Trial it and see what we learn and make adjustments. As a pedestrian, cyclist, public transport user and driver I share the many frustrations from each perpsective. However to help make London a better place to live, not least for the next generation, we do need to reduce traffic and its pollution as well as tackling other sources. The current situation is unsustainable and impacting on all our health deleteriously, so change is required. Inevitably it may cause inconvenience if not diffculties for some which we need to minimise. But unless we start to experiment and work towards making a step change, we - all of us - will have failed the next generation.

When does car free day become car free week..., car free month..., car free London?   This is an attack on personal freedoms hidden behind smiley Green is good properganda.  What happens to the people who need to use a car, not just the disabled but those moving house or merely shopping etc.?  This is not what we voted for when we elected the Mayor and it can only be seen as unproductive and intrusive.

A special day when not only no motorised vehicles, but cyclists do not go on pavements which are only for pedestrians, and stop at red lights and at pedestrian crossings.

Plus the people who use hire bikes, actually put them inplaces wherethey are not obstacles on pavements, which already have enough street furniture on them already.

Of course this is wishful thinking and will never happen.

Just like seeing the possibility of seeing a cyclist remonstrate with another cyclist going through red lights, riding illegally on a pavment or not stopping at a crossing when pedestrians are corssing and have the right of way

Thanks for your reply Tobermory, but in many years in London, I have only ever seen 3 cyclists shout out at other cyclists for their behaviour, one of them when he always get hit by another crossing into his path, and then also hitting pedestrians on the path, while another time a female cyclist called out to a cyclist who went straight through a red light and hit a van.

And often it is not motor vehicles taking up space is the problem, I have seen about roads in the City of London, empty roads, purpose built cycle lane and cyclists decising to cycle on the paths. Even in cases when the footpath is narrower than the cycleway. And no no vehicles are parked on the cycleway

One of the biggest problem worldwide with air pollution is actually caused by ships.

While London doesn't have many ships, there are a large number of small powered boats working on the Thames every day, right through the heart of London. I'm not sure how these are regulated but their small engines are definitely less efficient then the large engines on cruise ships, which are regulated, but still cause enormous amounts of air pollution.

For example, in 2017 the Carnival Corporation fleet emitted TEN times the total sulphur dioxide pollution emitted by ALL the cars in Europe!!

So my suggestion is to have a powered boat free day on the Thames and let the rowers and sailors have a fresh air day.

Oops, what a lot of angry car-lovers responding to this suggestion.Presumably many are still of the belief that they"pay their road tax and so have a right to use the road - a) it isn't road tax and b) you don't).For those of you claiming to be worried about getting to business or doctor's appointments and so on please note this is a SUNDAY (don't know about your GP but mine usually has this day off...). As for suggesting a acr-free day is unfair to "people not able to make long journeys without a car" remember most car journeys in London are 1 kilometre or less. And let's just assume also that the Mayor's Office is bright enough at least not to prevent emergency services from getting round (and legitimate blue badge drivers). Then even if the emergency services have to go down somewhere with a street party going on it'll only be a matter of hauling a trestle table or two aside while someone holds the jelly - just as we had with the royal weddings and after those I didn't see reports of mass deaths resulting from blocked-in ambulances or droves of organisers jailed for manslaughter, as some people on this page seem to think will happen. If it was OK for the Queen's kids, then it's OK for all our kids.

Indeed, for me, biggest benefit of those royal wedding street parties was for the kids in the morning, when the parked cars had been cleared and before the tables were set out, discovering how a street with no traffic thundering down it and no reeking choking pollution made such an amazing playground. In places like Newham where I live, which are just filthy unwholesome car-ridden warrens,  one car-free day isn't enough. Let's have alternate  Sundays car-free  with extra public transport!

As someone brought up in central London and having brought up my children in central London I think you will find that you don’t need street parties so children can play. The had a great time utilising the facilities at the many parks and playgrounds which had the added advantage of meaning they saw more of the world than their own street.

I'm not a car driver, but even I pay taxes that are supposed to help pay for roads as well as other civil infrastructure and public services and I am entitled to use them just as much or as little as I choose, although my visual impairment prevents me from being able to drive.

Not all people with disabilities have a blue badge - I don't.  Some people push themselves to be as independent and self-reliant as possible.  Some people don't want to be labelled disabled and some people find the idea of having a blue badge degrading, humiliating or stigmatising.  Some don't know that they are eligible and some people are still waiting for their application to be processed.  Many disabled people rely on friends and family who can drive to help them travel, shop, collect medication and loads of other stuff that able-bodied people take for granted.  Some people are housebound and rely on friends and family to do even more for them.   I try to be as self-reliant as possible.  I cope well enough with my poor eyesight, but when my spinal injuries flare up and my joints become inflamed, the pain is debilitating to the point I can't bear weight or walk more than a few meters, I need to be able to ask for help from my family and friends without them being restricted by empty political grandstanding.

My GP and my dentist both operate on Sundays.  The service is limited but I can also see my ophthalmologist, chiropractor, physiotherapist and orthopaediatition on a Sunday if I need to.

These publicity stunts, in tandem with station and line closures owing to upgrades and essential maintenance across the tube network, never yield a positive user experience for me.

Great initiative. Even though it's nowhere near enough to address the illegal pollution levels, it might enlighten enough people to imagine a better London.  Given the number of negative comments, I have some populist suggestions:

1) Immediately ban all domestic cars from inner city London with engines >2 litre capacity.  Bankers and oligarchs can walk.  Nobody needs an AMG Mercedes that does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and weighs 2.5 tonnes to get around London.

2) Blue badge holders get a grant for an electric vehicle, all disabled parking spaces get charging facilities.  Funded by a fine on Audi for cheating in emissions test.

3) From 2021 ban ALL domestic cars, diesel taxis and diesel buses from inner city London.  Bring back the Sinclair C5.

4) Hire dogs.  Like hire bikes, but you get the dog and walk it from your train station to your workplace, park it, someone else walks it to Pret at lunchtime, etc.  To stop everyone whining like pathetic babies about having to walk a few miles.

Not even joking :)
