Official Representative 5 years agoThanks everyone for sharing your views. A few of you have mentioned allotments.
Are there any allotments or urban farms near where you live? What do you think of them? Do you use them? If so, what do you like to grow?

We need more allotments for people to grow food. Plenty of empty glass office blocks we could turn into vertical allotments with soilless growing

Show full commentI run a small estate based community growing project with about 12 other members. We have two small orchards, allotment spaces, recycled greenhouse, community growing area, fruit bushes and are now linking and supporting other estate based projects. It all started with years ago with some trees from the orchard project and a small grant from Capital Growth. We also run corporate days to generate income for the garden with a local charity as a broker. It’s amazing what can be done but it’s hard work and all voluntary. However, made amazing when you can share a cake made with fresh rhubarb you picked that morning or even better a pink gin made with fruit from the garden.
As they say - build it and they will come. Now we just need legislation to protect it from greedy developers crying ‘housing crisis’ and eyeing up our remaining green growing spaces.

Community Member 5 years agoThey should get more support to schools to organise gardening clubs with a huge focus on growing your own. This way it will benefit the students and they can eat the food!

I work in a school and there here is no support from management to get this sort of thing off the ground! :(

Community Member 5 years agothe London plan should protect allotments.

Community Member 5 years agoAbsolutely agree. And increase numbers of allotments. The Mayor should also arrange for more boroughs to accept allotment tenants from inner London boroughs that do not provide allotments.

So far the toms are more successful than the spinach! I also grow tomatoes & herbs in my mum's garden for her & my two sisters (all done in honour of my dad who used to 'do' our gardens for us).
I like the idea of urban garden spaces where residents can work together growing & using/selling their produce. Would encourage people to think with a 'more healthy' hat on & possibly take responsibility themselves to eat better.

Community Member 5 years agoI have a small sunny front garden. Grow beans, tomatoes, chard, salad in pots.
Applied for an allotment 8 years ago and was told the waiting list was shut. To be honest half an allotment would be fine.

Community Member 5 years agoIf you are within reach of West Harrow, you could join that waiting list. They do take out-of-borough people, and do have some vacant allotments that need much work.

Community Member 5 years agoI have an allotment - we need more of these - at the very least we need to protect those we do have

Community Member 5 years agoYou could share your garden with somebody who is looking for a space to grow vegetables and flowers and share the produce.

Community Member 5 years agoIndeed, there is surely some local institution than can put you in touch with a person who would like to grow their own food and that way it keeps your garden tidy
