Hi all, and the Mayor!
I wondered if you could help with an event we are planning locally in support of Grenfell
, we thought you might be able to throw your weight behind the project.
I am local to Grenfell tower, and have lost friends there. For twelve years now I have been putting on charity concerts with The Kensal Town Fund, I have worked on a community barbecue at the Elmwood Tennis Club on Holland road and All Souls Avenue Nw10 for 14 years, in that time I have done Street parties on many streets in the area, Including College Road, Spezia Road, Furness Road, Ancona Road, and local school events.
I teach Beekeeping, and am mentor for novice beekeepers with the LBKA. I have worked teaching in Harlesden with Lady Serena Balfour and the US Charitable trust. Teaching young people filmmaking, HarlesdenTV was my creation.
I have been appalled by the tragedy at Grenfell, and want to do something for charities The London Emergencies Trust. and the Grenfell nursery.
We have been given a free night at the Shepherds Bush Empire by Ian Richards, and met Bill the manager there yesterday. After that meeting we went to latimer road to meet Damon Albarn ( Blur, Gorillaz etc) and he suggested that in order to get the Locals, the Firemen and doctors in to a gig for free we would need a lot more space. We also agreed a period of time for mourning is appropriate (forty days.) We are now looking at early September, and doing it in the nearest big local space which is Wormwood Scrubs. We are looking to produce a one or two day event, including several small stages, a kids area and the usual amenities. It's a big budget community thing.
I had been asked to do a Knife Crime event in Roundwood park near where a student of the Capital Academy (Quamari Barnes) was murdered in January, Marcia Green a local fundraiser and event coordinator informed me that the local Police Commander was keen for this type of event to happen, in order to bring the community together. He would also be keen to help find funding. I am still keen to have this event. However the crisis at Grenfell has taken over my time, for now.
We have been offered so much support for this idea it's quite incredible. The whole event would cost a lot, and we hope to get Google the internet company to give generously. Loosely the plan is to have several different types of music in line with Damon Albans world music view, (Africa Express) he would like to host local workshops, in Churches and Studios locally, and then take the various bands to this festival to perform.
We hope to have one large stage, not bigger than the one at Roundwood (respect festival roundwood 2011) plus smaller stages dotted about a large site, these may be in and around large tents and marquees. To add interest these would be in Yerts (http://www.yurtsdirect.com/index.html) and Bedouin (www.bedouintents.co.uk) tents, Tipis (http://www.lovetipis.co.uk/) etc to give a globally inclusive feel and festival atmosphere. Somewhere for everyone, and a large childrens play area.
This type of event should be for everyone in our community, respect, and unity creates harmony.
I have tried to contact the Mayor and am meeting the local council to discuss further on Monday. If you feel you could help us with this do drop me an email. [email protected]
