There is lots of good stuff in this Strategy doc, but very little mention of food, such a fundamental part of how we look after the environment. What about some recognition of the value of food growing within London? Community allotments, urban farms and indeed schools play an important part in engaging people with food growing and supporting the environment. Many Londoners, particularly young Londoners have no conception of where food really comes from and the impact on the environment that food production has. What we all choose to buy and eat could have a huge impact on the climate impact of London. The strategy doesn't mention the huge impact of food production on climate change at all.
I also think opportunities have been missed around getting food producers and retailers to save more of the food that would otherwise go to waste. The amount of edible food thrown away in London is a huge issue. The mayor, supermarkets and other retailers could do a lot to reduce this terrible waste. No mention is made of the charities that do amazing work in this space, redistributing surplus food .
