My concern is that after Brexit the UK does not have an equivalent or better level of environment protection and enforcement. The Government has committed to ensuring we leave our environment in a better state than we inherited it and an important part of that ambition is the desire to set a gold standard for environmental protection.  These are fundamental commitments and, if upheld, through mechanisms including those described in Mayor's Question 2019/3822 and Mayor's Question 2019/3823, will ensure that Brexit does not result in impacts on the environment.

Therefore, I am continuing to engage with government and demand they show the necessary level of ambition and commitment in the Environment Bill that will ensure they meet their stated ambition for our environment.  This will include legislating for the non-regression commitment whilst establishing an Office for Environmental Protection that is fully independent of government, appropriately resourced and granted the necessary powers to hold government to fully account.
