Transport for London (TfL) regularly publishes its Gender and Ethnicity Pay Gap reports and is committed to becoming a more diverse organisation. In line with these reports TfL has calculated the median and mean hourly rate of pay for each of the eight groups specified below:

Median Hourly Pay

Mean Hourly Pay

White Male

Black Male

Asian Male

Other Ethnic Group Male

White Female

Black Female

Asian Female

Other Ethnic Group Female

Recent recruitment campaigns at TfL have been the most diverse to date and TfL has been successful in attracting more women to the organisation. However, many of the new female starters to join have done so at entry level positions and pay. This has had the effect of reducing the mean and median average pay for TfL’s female employees, widening the pay gaps in 2018.  Women have also been more likely to apply for Customer Service roles, which pay less, than Train Operators roles for example.

TfL, as with other members of the GLA family, already publishes information on ethnicity and gender pay gaps. The data on intersectionality that you requested was not previously calculated due to significant gaps in the demographic information that TfL holds. Disclosure campaigns are planned for 2019/20 to improve the data so that intersectionality analysis can be included in future pay gap reporting.
