To be included on the Matrix, an individual must meet the following criteria: 'Someone who has been identified as being a member of a gang and this is corroborated by intelligence from more than one source (e.g. police, partner agencies or community intelligence).’

Females account for an extremely small proportion of individuals on the Gangs Matrix.  As of December 2018, there are 18 females on the Matrix (0.6% of the total Matrix population). The youngest female is 14 years old, the oldest 31 years old.  Three-quarters of the females are BAME.  Age and ethnicity breakdowns are provided in the tables below.

Female individuals on the Matrix are generally low harm and infrequent violent offenders, with 17 of the 18 in the graded as in the lowest harm category. 12 of the 18 females have been recent victims of violence. As with males; a victim-offender overlap is apparent; of the 18 individuals, eight feature on the Matrix as both victims and perpetrators.
