Police officers need to be fit and healthy to carry out this demanding role and they are fitness tested every year. To maintain operational readiness it is cost effective for the MPS to have a small number of fitness equipment available to police officers in various locations. The vast majority of the 66 locations are not fully equipped gyms, but have one or two pieces of fitness equipment that have to be regularly maintained. The largest facilities are also used for regular fitness testing of new recruits and firearms officers.

Some officers will use public/private facilities (at their own expense), for others it is more convenient for them to use free of charge equipment within local police stations before or after their shift.
