Answer for Foreign police deployments

During the 2017 calendar year Met officers were sent to the following locations. The majority of deployments lasted only a few days (2-8) the exception being one long term secondment to Sierra Leone from June 2016-March 2019).

The clear majority of these deployments are as a response to requests from foreign governments and police forces.  They recognise the expertise the Met has in respect of many areas of Policing.  All requests are carefully considered at Assistant Commissioner level, where necessary in consultation with the NPCC lead on international work.   All requests are subject to the approval and scrutiny of the Home Office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  Some of the larger deployments sadly reflect locations where following terrorist attacks the specialism of the Met has been particularly required to help build local capability.
