I have been contacted by a constituent who wishes to know the exact reasons for the continued delays in introducing a weekly cap on Oyster, when such a cap has long existed for passengers using contactless payment.   Can you finally provide an exact date when passengers using different forms of payment will be treated equally?

Transport for London (TfL) is working as quickly as possible to develop the technology needed to introduce weekly capping for Oyster users. I will launch weekly capping for Oyster users before the end of 2018, making public transport even more affordable for more people, as stated in my answer to Mayor’s Question 2017/3875.


Introducing weekly capping requires major changes to the Oyster system, which dates back to the 1990s, and the scale of this challenge cannot be underestimated. TfL is now carrying out the extensive work and testing required to be sure weekly capping on Oyster works correctly when it is introduced. I will confirm the precise launch date once testing is complete.
