Question

In light of the Government's updated air quality plans indicating a "high risk" of air pollution breaches at Heathrow, do you agree with me that the Transport Secretary's announcement of a further consultation on a third runway builds an even stronger case against the runway?

The evidence published by the Government last month in connection with its second consultation on the National Policy Statement on airport capacity emphasises the very serious consequences of Heathrow expansion. The Government's analysis makes clear that expansion would result in increased toxic air pollution across a wide area, with a high risk of making London's air pollution non-compliant with legal limits. It is wrong for the Government to promote a third runway at Heathrow when its own analysis shows expansion will undermine the measures I am implementing to improve air quality and public health in London.

It is time for the Government to recognise that a third runway at Heathrow is the wrong answer for London and for the UK.
