Question

A constituent has contacted me who wishes to know that with WiFi now standard on buses in Nottingham and Manchester, as well as in Sweden are there any plans to introduce WiFi to London buses?  As the service exists on the Underground, it now seems strange to not extend the same to buses.

Answer

TfL is open to the idea of Wi-Fi being installed on London buses if a third party were to offer to fund it, as is the case on the Underground.

Wi-Fi on buses in London was trialled in 2016, and was fully funded by advertising campaigns promoted through TfL's partner Exterion. Currently, there is no similar funding available to cover the cost of both fitting kit to all 9,500 buses in the fleet and the ongoing data charges incurred.

As Wi-Fi and mobile data, such as 4G and 3G, is now widely available across London, it makes it less cost effective for TfL to spend its own money on introducing Wi-Fi to London buses
