Question

The Government's draft air quality plans failed to include proposals for reforming Vehicle Excise Duty, so that rates reflect local pollutants such as NOx, NO2 and PMs, as well as CO2. What implications will this have for your plans to clean up London's air?

Please see my answer to MQ 2017/2181.

We know that fiscal incentives such as Vehicle Excise Duty have been hugely effective at encouraging people to purchase diesel vehicles. We should now be using the same tools to encourage the purchase of only the cleanest vehicles. It is essential that the final Government Air Quality Plan includes this if it is to be effective at achieving compliance as quickly as possible and with the greatest certainty.
