Question

One of my constituents, who lives in sheltered housing and has restricted mobility, has asked why bus routes 28 and 220 do not as yet have the new cleaner buses on these routes, and why is Mapleton Road still being used by such buses, which are polluting the area near the sheltered accommodation?

My Low Emission Bus Zones are targeting the most polluted corridors quickly and will include adjacent areas such as Lavender Hill to Wandsworth Road.

The zones are only part of far-reaching measures to tackle London's poor air quality.

Mapleton Road will benefit from my plans for all buses in the fleet to meet or better the Euro VI engine standard by 2020 through upgrading of exhaust systems and replacement of vehicles. This cleaner engine cuts oxides of nitrogen by up to 95 per cent and particulate matter by up to 80 per cent and, from next year, I have required that all new buses entering the fleet are hybrid or zero exhaust emission.
