I am aware of the Sunday Times report and have asked Transport for London (TfL) to investigate. TfL is in contact with Southend Council regarding four drivers and is also conducting further background checks to ensure drivers were licensed in accordance with its published policy.

I am lobbying Government for control over cross-border hiring for both taxis and private hire vehicles. I believe that a requirement needs to be introduced to ensure a journey either starts or ends in the area for which the driver and vehicle are licensed. This will address the issue of drivers working 100 per cent of the time in an authority in which they are not licensed, while still allowing the flexibility for drivers to undertake return journeys.
