Question

What reaction does the Mayor have to the suggestion by NHS Chief Executive Simon Stevens, and his recent comments that binge drinking was having serious avoidable consequences on the NHS, LAS and police services? Will the Mayor commit to action on binge drinking within his forthcoming Health Inequalities Strategy and action plan, given both the full financial and social cost of a single case of binge drinking on public services?

The Mayor

Excessive alcohol consumption places a significant burden on many of our services. It also causes significant harm to individuals and communities.

We support the work of the London Ambulance Service, MPS, Public Health England, NHS, local authorities and others to reduce the harms associated with alcohol.  GLA officers are currently working to improve understanding of the nature and the scale of the problem in London as well as supporting the national project Evaluating the Diversion of Alcohol Related Attendances (EDARA).

My forthcoming health inequalities strategy will be published for consultation later in 2017.
