MPS candidates submit applications and then are invited for interview.

Applicants are assessed against performance indicators relevant to rank, and understanding of Counter Terrorism and the government's counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST.

Successful officers attend accredited courses covering prevent case management, working with partners, and community and safeguarding as well as training regarding deploying with investigative units and training on their responsibility to identify vulnerable individuals.

Officers receive further training in open source social media, Workshop Raising Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) and presentation skills. Training days are attended twice a year covering priority issues. Officers also undertake computer based training and Case Management Information System (CMIS) training relating to Channel.
