Festivals like Bonfire Night and Diwali are celebrations that attract large volumes of people and I want to support these cultural events across London, but they must be carried out safely.

As part of the MPS's Autumn Nights operation they have been engaging with children to talk to them about the dangers of fireworks and also the legislative implications for the schools. This would have contacted in the number of 500 schools.

They have also engaged in trading standard visits with fireworks vendors to ensure that they were supplying fireworks in accordance with legislation.

My Deputy Mayor, Sophie Linden, and I were briefed in advance on the MPS operational response.

Sophie has been on patrol with Havering town centre police team as part of the Autumn Night operation, talking to members of the public about anti-social behaviour and listening to their experiences on keeping people safe at this time of year.
