In light of ClientEarth winning its High Court case against the Government over the failure to tackle air pollution across the United Kingdom, will you lobby the Government to adopt a diesel scrappage scheme to help Londoners comply with the proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone?

Yes, absolutely. The High Court ruling brings sharply into focus the scale of the country's air pollution crisis and lays the blame at the door of the Government for its complacency in failing to tackle the problem quickly and credibly. This must now act as a real wake-up call and that serious action by the Government is long overdue.

Diesel is the biggest and most problematic source of NOx emissions. A credible plan will have to accelerate the pace at which these vehicles are phased out. A diesel scrappage scheme is essential if compliance costs to people and businesses are to be minimised. It is only right that the Government provides this help given that national fiscal policy has encouraged dieselisation over many years, meaning many people bought polluting vehicles in good faith.
