The use of 'restraint' on persons in custody is recorded by noting if 'restraint equipment indicated' on a 'radio button' on the electronic custody system. Details of the type of restraint used are recorded in the body of the custody record as free text entries, almost without exception this would mean the detainee was handcuffed.  However, it is not possible to extract from the system exact details of the type of restraint used.

The data requested has been provided in Appendix B by custody suite rather than borough, since a custody suite may deal with persons from across London. Children are defined as aged 17 years and under. It is not currently possible to retrieve data pre-2014.
