Question

Drying washing outside is a good way to save money and resources, and dedicated areas for this are provided on many council estates. They are not currently protected from development by any specific planning measures in the London Plan or legislation. What is your view on the potential loss of these facilities and the level of protection they have?

Whilst drying areas do not benefit from specific planning protections, the planning application process ensures that the value of these facilities is considered and balanced against other objectives, such as the need to accommodate additional housing.

We will consider this issue further with stakeholders as part of my new guidance on estate regeneration.
