I have always been supportive of universal free school meals for 4-7 year olds as I believe there is sufficient evidence to suggest that free school meals could positively impact the health, well-being and academic attainment of children from all backgrounds. My commitment is reflected through the delivery of Food Flagships programme where the aim is to improve the food environment across two local authorities. An important element of this programme has been the implementation of the School Food Plan which aims to improve and increase the take-up of school meals through promotion and education.

My understanding is that the Government's free school meal grant for small schools was always intended to be temporary. I will however be providing a response to the Government's forthcoming consultation on reforms to the school funding formula.
