Any rise in homelessness is a cause for real concern and termination of an assured shorthold tenancy is now the single biggest trigger of homelessness. But we need to bear in mind the fact that the private rented sector itself has grown dramatically - by an estimated 46% over the five years between 2008/09 and 2013/14 - and so it is not surprising that the number of homelessness cases arising from the private rented sector has also grown.

This trend underlines the vital importance of work I am doing to increase the supply of homes of all tenures. Last year we delivered almost 18,000 affordable homes, the largest number since 1981, and I am on track to deliver 100,000 affordable homes across my two Mayoral terms.
