TfL currently operates more than 21,000 CCTV cameras and the main cost implications would relate to data storage. Other costs would be incurred by the processing of requests for access to additional footage from law enforcement agencies, insurance companies, customers, and members of the public. These requests would have to be processed in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Data Protection Acts.

There is a requirement under privacy and data protection legislation, and regulatory guidance from the Information Commissioner's Office, to ensure that TfL has a clear and proportionate business need to retain images from its various camera systems for the specified retention period and to explain these requirements via its website.
