TfL's CCTV infrastructure is made up of a number of different systems and technologies (some analogue, some digital), which have been installed by different business areas over many years, to meet a range of different operational requirements.

The retention periods associated with different camera networks were determined at the time of installation and vary according to the purpose for which each system was installed and the data storage capacity available for the images being captured. For example, LU on-train cameras have a limited data storage capacity because of the limited physical space available within that operational environment.

Work is currently underway to review and consolidate the various retention periods with a view to adopting a simpler and more consistent approach.
