Question

Do you acknowledge the widespread cross-party criticism that terminating the Barking Riverside railway at a viaduct station is not good use of public money, because the line can never be extended south of the Thames?

I do not acknowledge this criticism at all.  There is a pressing need to connect the Barking Riverside development to the rail network to unlock 10,800 homes.  In partnership with Barking and Dagenham council, the GLA and TfL have progressed plans for an extension of the London Overground that can be delivered by 2020.  These plans are funded and have the firm support of the local community.

In my 2050 Infrastructure Plan I have identified the longer term potential for this line to be extended further under the Thames.  The design of the extension to Barking Riverside is such that it allows for this to happen in the future.
