A significant number of footbridges on the national rail network in London are the responsibility of Network Rail.

London Underground's (LU) footbridges are subject to an annual general inspection, plus a principal inspection every four years which includes a survey of the structural condition. In addition, LU's planned preventative maintenance programme allows their contractors to carry out minor maintenance activities as and when the need arises.

In cases where the footbridge is not on the station and has public or non-LU user access, arrangements for security (including vandalism prevention), cleaning, lighting, and surface drainage is the responsibility of the local authority.
