The proposed DLR extension to Barking Riverside was never funded and was in fact slowing the development of the area. The Overground extension to Barking Riverside is a much better proposal to unlock the 10,800 homes potential, linking Barking Riverside to both Barking and central London.

TfL will be carrying out a consultation later this year on the preferred route for an extension of London Overground's Gospel Oak - Barking line, ahead of submitting an application for a Transport Works Act Order (TWAO) early next year.

Subject to an agreed masterplan for the area, approval of the TWAO application and availability of rail possessions to carry out construction work, the rail link could be opened by the end of 2020.
