Independent Advisors provide independent, strategic and specialist advice to the Metropolitan Police Service from the perspective of a community member / individual with particular insight, lived experience or specialist knowledge.

A collective of Independent Advisors focussed on a particular theme or issue is known as an Independent Advisory Group (IAG).  There are currently four strategic IAGs - Race, Disability, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, and Trident.

Membership to a corporate IAG is subject to tenure of four years, with elections held to fill key positions. The principles of the corporate model have been adapted at local level with Borough Commanders establishing local IAGs to support the policing of local communities.
