The role of the Metropolitan Police Service is to prevent and deter and resolve crime and disorder.  It has never been the role of the police service to steward protests per se.  It has been and remains the expectation that where lawful activity requires the closing of roads or stewarding of the public, the promoters of that activity should take responsibility for ensuring that those things can be done safely and well.  The right of people to protest peacefully is enshrined in law and tradition and is not affected by this.
