TfL recognises that more steps need to be taken to make travelling more comfortable during exceptional summer temperatures. TfL has a number of approaches across the network to help keep conditions cool for passengers.

I am aware of passenger concerns about the cooling system on the New Routemaster. TfL has already explored a range of sustainable options and taken the following steps on behalf of passengers.

                    Reconfiguring existing air cooling systems on New Routemasters to come on at a lower thermostatic temperature of 21 Celsius - which introduces cooled air earlier than before to help reduce temperature build up

                    Trialling solar film on half of the vehicles operating on route 73 which, under test conditions, can reduce heat build up by up to five Celsius. This will help TfL understand the contribution solar film could make to reducing heat on all types of double deck buses in the fleet.

                    Considering other options such as greater ventilation and enhanced engine bay insulation.

I also asked TfL to work with Wrights to look again at possible design options to improve passenger comfort. I am pleased to report they have now come up with an affordable, workable design to install opening windows on both decks of the New Routemaster. This will be rolled out on existing vehicles and those yet to be built and TfL anticipates that the majority of the fleet will have these windows by summer 2016.
