In total, 23,768 children detained in police custody have been supported by an appropriate adult in the last four years. In addition, there were 19 occasions on which an appropriate adult was requested, but where the records do not indicate whether for a child or vulnerable adult.

The table attached [at Appendix X] provides yearly data broken down by borough.

The increase is due to a change to Pace Code C, which now requires 17 year olds to have an appropriate adult.
