Metropolitan Police crime statistics show sexual offences in Redbridge have increased by 32 per cent in the past year. Can you provide a breakdown of the types of offences and help identify whether this large increase is primarily being driven by an increase in reporting?

Recorded sexual offences in Redbridge have risen by +42% (+144 offences, Apr13 – Mar14 compared to Apr14 – Mar15).

Sexual offences are significantly under-reported and analysis suggests that the increases are due to historical reports resulting from the Savile inquiry (Operation Yewtree) and increased public awareness of those offences following high-profile cases along with improved police recording practice.
