Question

Recent analysis by the Financial Times found that only 20 per cent of the 23,000 homes being built on 61 sites in London that have started since March 2014 are affordable. Are you concerned that this figure is an early sign that London will not meet the number of affordable homes required by the London Plan for this year?

Analysis referred to by the Financial Times is based on a limited survey of very large development projects providing over 100 units. The London Plan AMR shows that over the last three years 34% of overall net conventional housing supply was affordable housing.

The new housing targets in the London Plan are ambitious and represent a real challenge but it is one which must be tackled if we are to address Londoners’ pressing housing needs. This is why I have announced 9 new Housing Zones which aim to accelerate the delivery of 9,000 new affordable homes. A further 11 Housing Zones should be in place by the summer.
