Question

It has been suggested that the main reason you have abandoned plans for safety improvements on CS2 is because Whitechapel market traders want to park their vans in loading bays next to their stalls. Other markets in Tower Hamlets such as on Chrisp Street and Watney Street do not provide this facility. In addition, the bays at Whitechapel market are loading bays only, but traders routinely exceed the loading times, thereby breaking the law. Why should east London cyclists be put at risk to facilitate rule-breaking in this way?

Please see my response to MQ66 / 2015.

Whitechapel Market plays an important role in the vibrancy and commercial viability of the local community. The market has some unique requirements and TfL have therefore revised designs to balance the needs of all users in this busy area.

Parking and loading facilities are not currently available in any other location in the vicinity, and the original proposals restricted the hours of operation of the bays between 4.00pm and 7.00pm. The market currently closes at 6.00pm, which would have have resulted in a detrimental impact on their operations.
