TfL has two categories of maintenance for subways. The first is routine maintenance activities to keep the subway safe and free from defects, such as drain clearance and inspections. These are included in with other services under lump sum arrangements for the area, rather than by each structure, so it is not possible to separate out the cost.

The second category is capital renewal, which prolongs the life of the component parts of the subway: replacing lighting, surfacing, tiles and handrails, for example.  The value of the capital maintenance activity varies from year to year based upon a whole life cost approach to asset management.

Over the past five years TfL has invested around £20,000 per annum for these structures.
