Question

The Chancellor's Autumn Statement has recognised the importance of supporting economic growth through investment in transport infrastructure and in particular has supported creating a link between some of the country's most important scientific and technical centres of excellence by investing in rail links to the Cambridge Science Park and looking into an Oxford Cambridge expressway. Will you provide similar support to Sutton's ambitions for a Life Science Cluster with the Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute for Cancer Research by supporting the Borough's campaign for a Tramlink extension which would link into the Life Science Cluster site in the long term?

I am supportive in principle of extending the tram network.

Proposals like the one to serve the Life Science Cluster could unlock additional benefits in terms of jobs and homes, which in turn could generate funding towards the cost of the scheme.

They could also add cost if the scheme needs to be lengthened. Sutton, Merton, and TfL are looking at a number of route options, including this one, to see which best balances costs and benefits.
