Planned downtime is important to allow TfL to introduce new and better services for customers, for example to allow them to apply on-line for refunds for service delays or when they incurred a maximum fare.

The table attached at Appendix H shows the number of hours that Oyster Online was unavailable over the last two years together with the percentage of total hours for the year that this represents.

Both planned and unplanned downtime periods tend to be during the night when demand is low, therefore the proportion of users affected will be significantly less than the percentages imply.

The increasing popularity of the website and the range of facilities offered meant that the site came under increasing pressure in 2014. A programme of works to increase the capacity and stability of the website is underway.
