Many industrial plots in Hackney Wick are being bought up by property speculators and developers, to be converted to residential and mixed use. This is already resulting in the loss of valuable industrial employers, and a reluctance on the part of landlords to let spaces that may be developed on, leaving sites empty. Will you ask the London Legacy Development Corporation to review whether it can designate and protect more of the area to remain for industrial use, and to proactively support the area to be a thriving hub of industry?

The London Legacy Development Corporation's Local Plan designates locations for employment uses where these should be protected or re-provided within proposals for site redevelopment. The locations designated for employment use have been developed from specific research based evidence which has informed the balance between employment and other uses, including housing, across Hackney Wick as part of a sensitive approach to regeneration within the Local Plan.

The Legacy Corporation, through its planning and regeneration activity will continue to seek the delivery of new space that can accommodate businesses within Hackney Wick and Fish Island.

The Here East development, which borders the Hackney Wick area exemplifies the approach in the Local Plan and should become a thriving hub of industry, providing specialist studios aimed at artists, designers and craftspeople, alongside the larger scale broadcast and technology businesses and education spaces.
