Question

London's live music venues are the lifeblood of this cultural metropolis.  However, venues such as the Coronet in Elephant and Castle are increasingly facing challenges which threaten their very future.  In discussions between the Coronet's management and the GLA's culture team, officers have suggested that there could be a case for protecting this historic venue within the framework of the regeneration plans for the area.  Will the Mayor agree to help safeguard the future of the Coronet?

I agree that culture is the DNA of London and people come from around the world to enjoy our live music venues and festivals.

I believe it is important to strike a balance between the much needed regeneration of areas like Elephant and Castle and the protection of London's cultural assets. I am keen for a strong cultural offer to be a central part of the regeneration of Elephant and Castle.

My Culture Team are meeting the London Borough of Southwark in the new year to discuss their Cultural Strategy for Elephant and Castle.

I am also convening a meeting of live music venues in January to explore ways in which music venues in general can be better supported across the capital.
