Under the Ultra Low Emission proposal currently out for consultation, zero emission capable taxis would retain a 15 year age limit rather than the proposed 10 year age limit for diesel taxis. This is to acknowledge that these vehicles will be far less polluting and the differential will also act as an incentive and encourage uptake.

By maintaining an age limit for zero emission capable taxis the fleet will continue to be renewed and will improve as technology advances. For example, over the next decade it is likely that the range that vehicles can reach with zero emissions will far outweigh current performance as technology improves. This allows us to continue to work towards securing a zero emission future for London. A maximum vehicle age limit also facilitates other improvements linked to vehicle safety and accessibility.
