Question

Do you think that we should be focusing our efforts on reducing the regulatory load on private landlords as opposed to increasing them, as appears to be the case with the "right to rent" scheme, which stipulates that London's landlords must now check the immigration status of their new tenants? Should this not be the job of the UK Border Agency?

Answer

In principle small businesses should be subject to as little undue regulation as possible. However the UK needs strong borders and a robust system of checks. We have written to the Housing Minister to say that I welcome the proposals but it is important to ensure that the burden on landlords is light, that the Home Office support service functions adequately, and that the initiative is monitored to ensure those with the legal right to live and work in London do not face discrimination.
