Question

The letter that I received on the 24th July 2014 from Kit Malthouse AM stated that the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) leads on monitoring developments around the use of such contracts, but London Enterprise (LEP) is not planning to undertake any research on the use of zero hours contracts. When will you next have a discussion about Zero Hour Contracts with BIS, and can you ask them to carry out research on the scale of their use in London?

I have no immediate plans to discuss the matter with BIS.  As lead Department on this work, BIS is using data from a survey by the ONS of businesses for which no regional estimates exists. It will be for BIS to consider whether or not to break this data down to regional level or to carry out region-specific research. However, as I have said previously on this issue, I believe it is better for someone to have a job than not to have one at all. I believe it is important focus on ensuring that people are paid properly through the London Living Wage.
