The location for most monitoring stations were chosen by the relevant local borough, with a small number sited by Defra, the GLA, Transport for London, the Environment Agency or specialist organisations like Heathrow Airport. The rationale for locating a monitoring station will depend on its purpose.

I am keen to improve the way that monitoring stations are sited so that we create a more strategic network which consistently monitors a wider range of pollutants at more locations. I am working with the London boroughs to agree how this could happen as part of developing my proposals for a London-specific Local Air Quality Management approach.
