The number of officers under formal 'Unsatisfactory Performance Procedures' as of August 2014 is as follows:

Stage 1             135

Stage 2             18

Stage 3             9

This is a three stage process. The process is initiated at Stage 1 and should performance not improve can be escalated to Stage 2 and finally Stage 3.

The maximum sanction for officers under stage 1 is an improvement notice and the maximum sanction for officers under stage 2 is a final improvement notice. Should the process be escalated to Stage 3, it can lead to a reduction in rank or dismissal.

It is important to realise that the ultimate aim of the procedure is to improve individual performance.
