Question

Further to your claim that a national scrappage scheme for diesel vehicles is now needed as a priority [Evening Standard, 01 September 2014] why have you consistently refused to implement a financial incentive scheme to encourage taxi drivers to purchase the cleanest available vehicles in London, promised in each and every year of your first mayoral term?

I announced in January my intention that from 2018 all new taxis must be zero emission capable. To support the introduction of these new taxis to ensure they are affordable I've asked my team and TfL to explore all the supporting measures and incentives available for drivers and fleet owners with partners such as the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, vehicle manufacturers and financial institutions such as the Green Investment Bank.

TfL will consult on this proposal later this year and details of what financial help will be available to support the purchase of these new vehicles will be provided when we have concluded our discussions with these partners.
