The Airports Commission has undertaken a detailed analysis of a number of important issues including the need for additional capacity. I agree with their fundamental conclusion that there is a pressing need for new runway capacity, specifically in the southeast of England. Building no new runways would potentially have very serious implications for London and the UK's economic prosperity.

Nevertheless, it is imperative that the Commission recognise the nature, scale and timing needs of new capacity. By the mid-2030's, a 4-runway hub airport is required if the connectivity needs of London and the UK are to be effectively met. The Commission must also recognise and appropriately value the adverse impacts that all options would have. Expanding Heathrow for example would have unacceptable consequences for hundreds of thousands of people.
