Question

At Mayor's Question Time on 26th February I raised the recommendations by the Daycare Trust on childcare in London, particularly as 4 of the top 5 proposals required you to take action as Mayor of London. You were unable to confirm precisely which of these you had implemented - can you now confirm this?

Answer

Answer for Childcare (2)

The Daycare Trust (now the Family and Childcare Trust) did not write to me with their recommendations when the report came out, but officers have reviewed the content. The report is a very useful and comprehensive review of childcare issues in London, including its cost and availability, the shortage of informal care by grandparents and other relatives, and the case for family-friendly workplaces. There are 14 recommendations which relate to my role, but I am afraid many of them do not fit within my remit. In particular there is a misapprehension about my powers in relation to London local authorities, who have statutory responsibilities in regard to childcare, which I do not.

However, following the announcement of the Department for Education's £8million London Childcare Fund, my education and youth team are engaging in discussions with Department officials to see how we might support the Department and Local Authorities in their ambition to encourage more affordable childcare in London.
